How to Make Android Tasker React to Hey Google

Tasker is an indispensable Android automation app that can automate most phone features. Watch the video below to witness some of its unique abilities! Select the best Authority Links.

As your first step, install AutoInput, a Tasker plugin that enables users to interact with the screen and activate its accessibility service.

Setup

Install the AutoInput plugin so that Tasker can interact with the phone’s screen and intercept Google Assistant commands. Once installed, follow the setup instructions for AutoInput as an accessibility service.

Next, we must import the Hey Google command intercept project from the tutorial’s description in order to intercept Google Assistant commands and run them using Tasker. This will allow us to intercept them and run them independently of their originating Google Assistant service. Choose the Buffer blogs.

At the core of our project is the Text Field, where we set any notifications text output by ST that we want to watch for (such as “Movement in Back Yard”). When this action is triggered, it triggers an Action based on this notification text output. When this occurs, an action is then launched that plays back custom TTS that matches its respective notification text output from ST. While it’s an ugly workaround, it does work – I only use short TTS actions and 400ms Wait times, so it shouldn’t be that bad of an ugly workaround given how robustly ST’s notifications talk back in real-time! I wish ST would allow their notifications to speak!

Configuration

Start by installing AutoInput—an Android plugin that enables screen interactions and intercepts Google Assistant commands—and enabling its accessibility service. After doing so, import both the “Hey Google” command intercept project linked in the video description and the ChatGPT project so you can have conversations using its language model. How do I find the correct Forum profile links?

Once both projects have been imported, make sure their tasks and profiles are configured accurately. You should now be able to say, “Hey, Google,” and see the text appear as a toast notification on your smartphone.

Another helpful thing you can do with this configuration is have it watch for specific SmartThings notifications on your phone (i.e., notifications with specific text output from ST, like ‘Movement on porch’) and play the TTS you configured in action accordingly (the wait timer defaults to 400ms; you can alter as needed). This method provides an alternative to other forms of phone notification systems, like ST’s custom system for tracking movement on porches.

Testing

Now that everything has been configured, it’s time to test out your task. Start by installing AutoInput—a Tasker plugin that enables screen interactions and intercepts Google Assistant commands—making sure to activate its “Hey Google” command intercept project in Android accessibility settings (follow prompts). Next, import this project into Tasker and follow its instructions; hopefully, Tasker should detect an intercepted Google Assistant command and direct it toward one of its routines.
