Heroines Without Dress Code
Diana Ross
Diana Ross is one of America’s most revered artists and an icon, having inspired generations of musicians, celebrities, and young dreamers all over the country with her rise from Detroit’s North End neighborhood to top billing at Motown Records. With two stars on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and receiving the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007, Diana has genuinely become an invaluable national treasure.
Ross first gained recognition as the lead singer of Motown girl group The Supremes. Later, she launched her solo career with hits “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “I’m Coming Out.” As an individual artist, she has amassed more than 100 Billboard Hot 100 singles as a solo artist, including four back-to-back number-one tracks – making Ross one of few female artists to have accomplished this achievement.
Ross has been nominated for several television and movie roles, as well as for Golden Globe and Tony awards. Additionally, she is married twice, with one child from each marriage: a daughter with music executive Robert Ellis Silberstein (deceased) and a son with Motown founder Berry Gordy.
Even though singer Diana Ross has experienced challenges in her personal life, she remains an inspirational role model for women of all ages. A dedicated humanitarian, Ross has worked to advocate various causes throughout her career – receiving numerous awards, including the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Woman of Power award.
In 2021, Ross was named one of the 30 greatest Billboard Hot 100 artists ever and continues to tour and perform around the globe. She exudes grace and strength that cannot be denied.
Tracee Ellis Ross recently honored her mother by posting an Instagram photo of herself wearing the same beaded yellow halter dress that her mom wore decades earlier for a photo shoot. To complete her glam look, the Black-ish star completed her look with a matching netted headpiece and dark eye shadow makeup for maximum impact.
Carrie Fisher
Carrie Fisher was both an icon and an iconic performer. Beginning her career on Broadway before transitioning into film and television work with Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill for their groundbreaking Star Wars films with Fisher as Princess Leia as its heroine, Carrie Fisher soon became a beloved it-girl for an entire generation.
Since then, she has made appearances in multiple movies and written best-selling memoirs and novels. Her acting skills were second to none – she could convey more with just one look than many could with words spoken aloud; furthermore, she served as an in-demand script doctor who provided expert assistance for tightening other writers’ awkward dialogue.
When she passed away in 2023, we all suffered the loss of an immense talent, yet her legacy lives on indefinitely. Despite facing difficulties with drugs and depression herself, she always made time for others, sharing words of advice or simply offering smiles that lit up any room. A true fighter, she never shied away from discussing her struggles openly with everyone around her.
Her latest movie, Wonderwell, doesn’t quite capture her artistry as we had come to expect; however, it does provide us with an intimate view into her life. She opens up candidly about her past without appearing malicious or dishonest; rather she seems slightly maddening.
Carrie Fisher’s final film moved fans. To pay their respects, many gathered at House Organa, where she lived in Star Wars, to honor their hero; lightsaber vigils were even held at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema theaters around California and elsewhere. For those unable to travel there in person, an online memorial was set up on the Star Wars website featuring an empty star with a message reading “Carrie Fisher / May the Force be with you always.” Flowers and candles have also been laid at this tribute site.
Alia Bhatt
Born and raised in Mumbai, Bhatt has always had an immense passion for acting. Inspired by watching her father direct movies, Bhatt made the decision to become an actress herself and has since created her path through Bollywood royalty to success as an actress. Student of the Year marked her film debut and garnered rave reviews from critics. Later, she went on to appear in Imtiaz Alis’ Highway and won a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress; Bhatt then co-starred alongside Arjun Kapoor in 2 States, where critics awarded high marks as well. In 2016, she made her film debut in Abhishek Chaubeys Udta Punjab as a Bihari migrant and earned critical and commercial acclaim. Dear Zindagi was also well received. 2017 brought Badrinath Ki Dulhania featuring Varun Dhawan, which garnered further acclaim and garnered much fanfare; additionally, she has amassed an extensive following online. Additionally, she established an environmental initiative called CoExist that she hopes will make its mark.
Alia Bhatt currently resides in London but considers herself a citizen of the world. She has presently multiple international projects in production, such as Netflix’s Heart of Stone with Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan; for release in 2022, include Meghna Gulzar’s period drama Raazi with Vicky Kaushal as Vicky Kaushal as Vicky Kaushal; as well as Zoya Akhtar’s musical Gully Boy that centers on Mumbai’s underground rap scene.
Bhatt is an active humanitarian, taking part in both philanthropic work and brand ambassador work for various companies. She hosts fundraisers and awareness campaigns on multiple causes as an animal rights supporter with her pet dog, Misha. Despite being very busy, she makes time for quality family time with Shaheen and Soni Razdan (her sister-in-law and mother) being her primary sources of inspiration; currently, she is dating Kapoor and Sons co-star Sidharth Malhotra, whom she regards as her most significant source of motivation; Bhatt has spoken openly about her battles with depression before.
Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra, 38-year-old actress, producer, philanthropist, singer, and former Miss World winner, has done it all: from acting, producing, and endorsing brands to opening her Indian-fusion restaurant and celebrating her 36th birthday at London’s Chiltern Firehouse with boyfriend Nick Jonas at her side recently. Additionally, this Quantico star (she stars in Baywatch this year!) has become known as an elegant style icon both on and off red carpets alike.
Attire that spans from sari-style wrap dresses to frothy tulle gowns is within her repertoire; no look is off-limits for her. She embraces her Indian roots by donning designs by Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi, Miss Sohee, and Richard Quinn, as well as emerging labels like Miss Sohee and Richard Quinn – and while she can rock Met Gala-worthy gowns like those found here are equally alluring.
No matter where she roams in New York or London, Chopra never fails to deliver style inspiration. A master of mixing clashing textures and prints, playing with hemlines, and including bold jewelry in her looks, Chopra never shies away from exploring colors or patterns outside her comfort zone–even if that involves pink heels with a sheer lavender bomber jacket.
Chopra’s maternity style has been equally exquisite, with the actress showing off her bump in an Isabel Marant mini dress with elegant, bold shoulders and long sleeves paired with white accessories for an effortlessly classic ensemble. Chopra has also been seen wearing draped silk crepe gowns by Ralph Lauren as well as belted A-line mini poplin dresses featuring slit sleeves paired with tan pumps and bags for chic looks during her pregnancies.
Recent events saw Chopra emerge in an eye-catching red floral Ralph Lauren gown for a wedding reception in Dubai. Completed by an ornate petal-covered cape, she dazzled guests such as Gauri Khan (SRK’s wife) as well as Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari F1.
